Why Football?
An Insight Into The Cultural Impact Of The Sport
Throughout History there have been many social changes which have drastically affected their lives of those in society but there has always been one constant; Sports and more specifically, Football.
Football has provided a sense of purpose and excitement to the working man and woman as after a grueling week at work, they are able to experience pure joy and for 90 minutes in their lives, forget about any of the problems they have and dive deep into another reality but this has really evolved over time.
Each of the Top 5 leagues have their own unique and special culture but the Premier League embodies all of these cultures combined. They incorporate the frantic nature of the Germans, the technicality of the Spanish, and the determination of the Italians whilst keeping their own values of hard work and physicality.
Skip to 2:45 on the video below to see just how the raw emotion of the Premier League works. 2-0 down in a must-win game for their title charge, Reiss Nelson, who hasn’t started a PL game this season, scored a last-second winner which sent the fans ballistic.
But there is something to deeper to football that creates these types of emotions. For instance, look at the protests for the proposed Super League. The Super League was an idea by the elite of European football to create a closed competition for the most historic clubs but quickly, these elites found out that this was not a popular idea.
Despite being in a midst of a dangerous pandemic, protests took part against the Super League in ways that has never occurred before. For example, Manchester United fans gathered in numbers outside Old Trafford to voice their discontent and actually managed to postpone their game against Liverpool (!)
This image shows how the United fans were able break into a ground guarded with security and show just how valuable this sport is to them and any actions that look to change it should always have their support.
This further goes to underline something that shows how valuable this sport is. Football is not just a ball being kicked around for a set period of time but is actually a way in which people express their feelings and has gone to a point where it can bring about active social change in ways that couldn’t have been imagined.
No matter how certain pundits, journalists, or voices try to push football as only just a sport, the fact remains that Football is the base of relations between lifelong friends as well as change in society which emphasizes my original point; Football is a cornerstone in society in more ways than one and is valuable for the many.
